Happy Living | Blog | Inspiration“We all start out knowing magic. We are born with whirlwinds, forest fires, and comets inside us. We are born able to sing to birds and read the clouds and see our destiny in grains of sand.”
(Robert McCammon)

The Golden Pool of Magic is an idea taken from Robert McCammon’s popular book, Boy’s Life (if you’re not already familiar, I encourage you to click here and read a short excerpt from the book.) I was enchanted by it the first time I read it a few decades ago, and it’s stayed with me all these years.

In the book, McCammon portrays the process of a sad truth of life, “… that every year we get farther away from the essence that is born within us,” and it reminds me of a conversation I had with a dear friend that has been a catalyst for the work I now do here at Happy Living.

I wrote about that conversation in my very first blog post on July 16, 2014 called What Happens After Dreams Come True?

During our conversation, my friend made several references to our “glory days” being behind us. At fifty-three years of age, I could not disagree more! I believe a better self is always possible today, every day, for the rest of our lives.

Ever since that summer day writing my first post nearly four years ago, I have been learning how to transform myself back to who I am at the core…to the essence that I was born with. Or maybe it’s better to say I have been unlearning[1] all the stuff that educated the magic out of my soul. Have a look at this short video and you’ll see what I mean.

If you’re anywhere near Austin, Texas this Friday, I hope you’ll join me for my keynote address at Paleo f(x) which is designed to help others transform themselves back to the essence they were born with too. The talk is called Disconnect, Immerse, Transform. It’s a mash-up[2] of the Golden Pool of Magic and my second book, Turning Inspiration Into Action.
