Mastering Yourself

Our meeting on Thursday, January 25, 2024, focuses on Mastering Significance, which is my way of saying “becoming the fully optimized person you are meant to be!”

I was recently asked to prepare a motivational talk for high school students encouraging them to realize they can have a truly, deeply, happy life by discovering their reason for being on this planet, working consistently and diligently, and believing it is possible. I provided a framework that I use to master significance in my life. I pointed them to examples of friends who believed they could master significance and have committed to doing it with all their strength and soul (listen to my inspiring interviews with Roger Fritz, Don Wickstrum, and Jean Celestine Lakin). Then, I watched the film NYAD, the remarkable true story of athlete Diana Nyad who, at the age of 60 and with the help of her best friend and coach, achieved her life-long dream: a 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida. Diana’s story teaches us that Mastering Significance is not bound by imposed limitations from outside you but rather is fueled when your soul is ignited by Purpose inside you; an incredible inner strength helping you accomplish things that seem beyond others’ reach, even when you may feel like it’s impossible.

Our group will be discussing these four aspects of Mastering Significance and comparing them to the example of Diana Nyad’s significant life.

ONE | Dream Big. Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? Who do you want to become? Think BIG. Be BOLD! The world is your oyster so you can do anything you want! Take some serious time in reflection. Ask yourself, “Where would I live if I could live anywhere?” “What would I do if I knew I could not fail? “What is my purpose as I begin the next chapter of my life developing my authentic potential and full power as a human being?” Imagine doing work you love, with people you love, in places you love, and all the while creating something of real value to others. That’s what I call living a life of significance. And that’s what we’re here to master. #DreamBig #BeBold #LifeLongDream #LifeOfSignificance

TWO | Plan Well. To live the life you were put on this planet to live, you have to plan well. Planning well means developing your unique philosophies for living your absolute best life. Failure to do so means conforming to someone else’s beliefs about your one wild and precious life. If you’re not living your life on your terms, then it’s being directed by someone or something outside you. And you were NOT put on this PLANET for that! #PlanWell #LiveYourBestLife #UniquePhilosophies #LifePlanning

THREE | Commit All In. Transforming from your old life to the new you, living in your purpose requires commitment. Serious commitment. A commitment to replace the old tired you with the fired-up energized YOU you are meant to be. A commitment of getting away and staying away from all the people, and the places, and the things that make you feel bad and moving towards the people, and the places, and the things that make you feel good. And a commitment to progress in a purposeful direction to the life of your dreams with consistency and steely determination. FOUR | Providence Moves. I’ve learned that believing you can do it, committing to doing it and going all in with boldness, with all your strength and soul is the only way for Mastering Significance in your life. Because, as Goethe tells us, when you commit all in, Providence moves, too. “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. In preparation for our meetings, I generally recommend that each member ponders over a quote or a few and does a little bit of light homework (reading a blog post or two and sometimes viewing a video, too). This is the prep work for our January 25, 2024 meeting.
